Canary Islands Flora Garden

Ericaceae

Erica canariensis Rivas-Mart., M. Osorio & Wildpret

Heather

This tree has a high ecological value, ranging from practically the coast in the north of the island to the high mountains. It can reach up to 15 meters in height. Its main trunk is grayish-brown and may branch from the base due to human activity. Its leaves are small, linear, and dark green. Its flowers are small and whitish. It differs from the yew in its leaves, which are softer to the touch, less hard, and more irregularly arranged than those of the yew. It needs sunlight to germinate, being a primary colonizer of open areas within the forest and at its edges, and also to survive, disappearing when the forest closes in.
