Canary Islands Flora Garden

Ericaceae

Erica platycodon (Webb & Berthel.)

Rivas-Mart. et al. subsp. platycodon
Yew

This shrub, which can reach up to 7 meters in height, is endemic to the Canary Islands and its bark peels off in strips. Its leaves are dark green and linear, arranged more regularly along the stem than those of heather (typically forming stars with up to six points when viewed from the tip of a terminal branchlet towards the base). Its flowers are very small and reddish in color. It is a characteristic plant of the Anaga mountain ridges, where it forms ridge-roofed brickwork. Its wood makes a very distinctive sound when its branches rub against nearby trees.
