The red spurge, or Canary Island spurge, belongs to the same family as the poinsettia. It is a beautiful shrub endemic to Tenerife, which can grow up to 2 meters tall and branches in an orderly fashion. Its main trunk and branches are orange, and the succulent branches bear the scars of fallen leaves. Its leaves, which are deciduous in summer, are grayish-green, sessile, lanceolate, with entire margins, and clustered towards the branch tips, where the characteristic dark red inflorescences appear.
