A low-growing, rounded shrub with non-poisonous latex in its stems, highly branched with thick branches, rarely exceeding 2 meters in height (although one specimen over 4 meters is known). The stems are gray (in older specimens, cuts made for latex extraction are often visible), and the growing parts of the branches are reddish-brown (sepia). The leaves, arranged in rosettes at the tips, are yellowish-green and linear-lanceolate. Solitary cyathiae adorn the branches. The fruits are three-valved capsules that burst open upon ripening to release seeds.
