Canary Islands Flora Garden
Euphorbiaceae
Euphorbia canariensis L.
Cardon

It resembles a cactus due to its large, candelabra-like growth and succulent appearance. Its stems perform photosynthesis by modifying their leaves into spines located at the tips of their quadrangular or pentagonal stems. They can reach several meters in height and cover large areas. The cyathia (inflorescences) are located at the terminal parts and tips of its branches. The fruit is a bright red, three-valved capsule that bursts open when ripe. Endemic to the Canary Islands.
