A tree 8 m tall, though it can reach up to 15 m. Leaves alternate, located towards the branch tips, glabrous, dark green, slightly rhomboid, and narrower at the base. Flowers white, pedicellate, growing on the branches, greenish-white. Fruit a berry, purplish-pink to black when ripe, edible. Endemic to Macaronesia, it is usually associated with laurel forests, although specimens can be found at lower elevations.
