Hypericum canariense L.

Canary granadilla, granadilla

An endemic shrub of Macaronesia, reaching up to 5 meters in height and highly branched from the base. It differs from other species of its genus found on the islands by lacking glands on the margins of its leaves. Its leaves are opposite and narrowly lanceolate. Its inflorescences are numerous, and its flowers are yellow. Its fruits are capsules containing numerous very small seeds. It experiences dormancy during the summer months when it lacks water. Introduced to places like Hawaii and Australia for its ornamental value, it has become an invasive species.
