The Canary Island hypericum (Hypericum malfurada) is endemic to Macaronesia and boasts the largest flowers (up to 5 cm in diameter) and leaves of all Hypericum species found in the Canary Islands. This shrub rarely exceeds 2 meters in height, and its stems typically grow upright initially before becoming trailing, giving the shrub a striking appearance. Its leaves are sessile and decussate (opposite and rotated 90º with respect to the pair of leaves above and below). Its large, yellow flowers with numerous stamens are arranged in showy terminal inflorescences. The fruits are capsules containing numerous small seeds.
