Canary Island juniper

The Canary Island juniper is a tree that can reach up to 7 meters in height. It is very striking and its appearance varies depending on the climatic conditions it is exposed to. The trunk, more or less twisted, is reddish-brown or grayish, and its bark peels off longitudinally as it grows, giving it a very characteristic look. The twigs (green branches) are cylindrical and covered with triangular, imbricate, scale-like leaves. They are only needle-like when young, at which time they closely resemble the leaves of the Canary Island cedar. Its pseudo-fruits (not true fruits, as they are gynosperms), called acorns (fleshy galbuli), are dark red when ripe and covered with bloom.
