Canary Islands Flora Garden

Asteraceae

Kleinia neriifolia Haw.

Verode, verol

A succulent shrub that can reach over 3 meters in height, although this is uncommon, with a woody, branched, ashy trunk scarred by fallen leaves. It can be confused with spurge, but it does not exude latex from wounds. It has a summer dormancy period, shedding its foliage in the summer. The leaves are arranged in dense clusters towards the tips, somewhat fleshy, simple, and lanceolate, with a prominent midrib. The flowers are in heads of few flowers (florets) gathered in terminal umbel-like inflorescences. The fruits have a pappus of denticulate hairs. This species is endemic to the Canary Islands.
