Malvaceae

Lavatera acerifolia Cav.

Pink mallow

The Canary Island mallow is a shrub that can reach 4 meters in height. It belongs to the hibiscus family, hence the resemblance to its flowers. It is an endemic species of the Canary Islands, with a variety (L. acerifolia var. hariensis Svent.) endemic to Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. Its leaves are light green and palmately lobed, similar in shape to those of the maple, from which it derives its scientific name. Its large flowers, with a deep pink to purple center and pale pink to white petal tips, distinguish it from the reddish-brown Canary Island mallow, which has salmon-colored flowers.
