Linked to the presence of the sea of clouds in the north of the higher islands, and between 350 m altitude (or even from 300 m) and 1,500 m there is an evergreen forest known as the laurel forest or laurel forest, a name received because of the shape of its leaves, similar to those of the laurel (lanceolate).
This environment is characterized by high humidity due to the stagnation of clouds brought by the moisture-laden trade winds. Rainfall is relatively abundant, ranging from 500 to 1200 mm annually, and is distributed throughout the year, reinforced by the sea of clouds, which can contribute up to 1000 mm of hidden precipitation per year. Temperatures are mild, ranging from 13 to 18°C, and sunshine is reduced due to the presence of the sea of clouds. The soils are characterized by being very rich in organic matter.

The forest has subtropical characteristics, and there are several distinguishable communities, some of which are strongly influenced by climatic characteristics and others by soil characteristics.
