Lauraceae

Ocotea foetens (Aiton) Baill.

Til, linden

A tree that can exceed 30 m in height, with brown bark covered in horizontally arranged warts. Its leaves are alternate, simple, dark green, glossy, and lanceolate, with entire margins and two or more pairs of swellings at the base in the axils of the secondary veins. The flowers are hermaphroditic or unisexual, yellowish in color, and arranged in paniculate inflorescences in the leaf axils of the branch tips. The fruit resembles an acorn. Endemic to Macaronesia, it is always associated with shady areas and deep, moist soils in laurel forests. It is known as Garoé on the island of El Hierro and is considered a sacred tree for its ability to capture water.
