This tree, endemic to Macaronesia and known as the Canary mahogany, can reach up to 30 meters in height. Its large, lanceolate leaves, up to 20 cm long, range in color from light green to ochre or orange-red as they age, a characteristic color that makes it easily recognizable in the forest. Its drupe-like fruit, green to purplish-black when ripe, is a small avocado containing a single seed; in fact, the avocado belongs to the same genus. The Canary viñatigo is a characteristic tree of the shadier laurel forests, growing in direct sunlight thanks to the abundant water in the soil.
