Pinewood

Above the constant influence of the sea of clouds on the northern slope (above 1500 m) and from 900 m on the southern slope, and up to 2000 m (in the north) or 2200 m (in the south) an open forest develops characterized by a single tree species, the Canary pine.

The average annual temperature is relatively cool, with lows of 11 and highs of 15ºC, with wide daily variations; rainfall is not very high, with annual values ranging between 450 and 600 mm, some in the form of snow, and sunshine is high.

The soil in this forest can be quite diverse, but it is generally characterized by being sandy and poor in organic matter. This may explain why its plant community is sparse in species (primarily limited to broom, gorse, and rockrose), although some authors attribute this low diversity to herbivory and the high frequency of forest fires. However, in this endemic forest, unintentional fire can be considered beneficial, as it promotes the germination of most of the accompanying species.
