Pinaceae

Pinus canariensis C. Sm. former DC. in Buch

Canary pine

This tree is endemic to the Canary Islands, found on the central and western islands, and can reach up to 60 meters in height. It has a very robust, cylindrical, straight trunk. Its bark, smooth when young, becomes thick and reddish, forming grayish plates with age. Its leaves are long and needle-like, growing in clusters of three. It is monoecious, with both female flowers, solitary and grouped in cones, and male flowers, also in cones but grouped in short clusters (soft cones), growing on the same tree. Mature cones are woody and contain winged pine nuts (seeds). It is fire-resistant and resprouts after fires.
