Canary Islands Flora Garden

Myrsinaceae

Pleiomeris canariensis (Willd.) A. DC.

Dolphin, net maker

An evergreen tree or shrub that rarely exceeds 10 meters in height, although it can sometimes reach 12 meters. Its method of propagation is unusual, as it occasionally reproduces through root suckers that emerge some distance from the parent tree. The leaves are arranged alternately, clustered towards the branch tips, glossy green, large (almost magnolia-like), ovate-lanceolate, obtuse, and have revolute margins. Its flowers, which appear in clusters on the younger branches (cauliflory), are tiny and greenish-white. The fruits, berries, are globose, turning a pale reddish-purple when ripe, and are edible.
