Rosaceae

Prunus lusitanica L. subsp. hixa (Willd.)

Franco Jija, daughter

This tree can reach over 10 meters in height, and even more under optimal humidity conditions in the laurel forest. It is recognized by its young branches and reddish petioles. In dense forests, it often falls, creating gaps in the forest canopy, which it quickly fills by rooting its fallen branches and colonizing more ground. Its leaves are dark green, ovate-lanceolate, and leathery with serrated margins and a slightly grooved midrib. The branches and leaves are arranged in a single plane. The white flowers are arranged in elongated, erect clusters. The fruits are ovate and purplish-black. This subspecies is endemic to Macaronesia.
