Canary Islands Flora Garden

Dipsacaceae

Pterocephalus dumetorus (Brouss. ex Willd.) Coult.

Wild rosebud

The wild rose is endemic to the Canary Islands. It's a small, compact, cushion-shaped shrub, rarely exceeding 1.5 meters in height, with dense foliage. Its leaves are ovate-lanceolate and light green. The pink flowers are clustered in heads, which in turn are grouped into racemose synflorescences at the ends of the stems. The fruits have hairs (pappus) that facilitate wind dispersal (anemochory). This remarkably easy plant may experience dormancy depending on the year. However, the seeds will germinate readily shortly after being planted in a garden.
