The blackthorn is an endemic species of the Canary Islands. It is a shrub that branches extensively from the base, with brittle, spiny branches, rarely exceeding 2 meters in height. Its leaves are alternate, small, and simple, ovate-lanceolate, with toothed margins and short petioles. Its tiny, yellowish-green flowers are arranged in inflorescences in the leaf axils. Its fruits are drupes that turn black when ripe.
