The sanguino is a tree endemic to the Macaronesian region that can grow to over 10 meters in height. It differs from other trees in that it is arboreal. Its leaves are alternate, simple, ovate, with regularly toothed margins and 6–8 prominent glands along the midrib. Its yellowish-green flowers are arranged in terminal clusters. The fruits are drupes that turn black when ripe.
