Rumex lunaria L.

The sorrel is a species endemic to the Macaronesian region. It is a shrub that branches extensively from the base, is usually evergreen, and may enter dormancy during the summer. Its stems are very brittle, and its bark is reddish. The leaves are alternate, simple, and slightly fleshy, rounded or heart-shaped, with a truncated base, and can be quite large depending on environmental conditions. The fruit has three membranous wings that facilitate wind dispersal (anemochory).
