Asteraceae

Schizogyne sericea (L. f.) DC.

White salt, lady, irama

The saltwort is an endemic species of the Macaronesian region. It is a shrub native to the coastal areas of all the islands, reaching up to 1 meter in height. The plant branches profusely from the base, where it is woody and has light brown stems with grayish tones. The herbaceous stems, grayish-white in color, are very fragile. The leaves are linear, somewhat fleshy, pale gray, and circular in cross-section. The grayish-white color is due to the high density of short hairs on the surface, a strategy the plant employs to avoid damage from excessive sunlight and heat. Its flowers are yellow, very small, and tubular, grouped in capitulum-like inflorescences, which in turn are grouped into synflorescences at the apical end of the branches.
