Asparagaceae

Semele androgyna (L.) Kunth

Gibalbera, alicacán

The gibalbera is a climbing vine endemic to the Macaronesian region that can reach up to 10 meters in length. Its "leaves" are actually modified stems called cladodes. These cladodes, which are flat, leathery, and broadly ovate in outline, are arranged alternately on the twining stem, allowing it to climb the trees of the laurel forest. Its flowering is very showy, as it occurs at the edges of these cladodes. The flowers are star-shaped and yellowish-white. The fruits are berries that turn red when ripe, making this species particularly striking during fruiting.
