Canary Islands Flora Garden

Smilacaceae

Smilax canariensis Willd.

Canary sarsaparilla

A climbing vine with highly branched stems, thorny at the base, which can exceed several meters in length and tend to intertwine, acquiring considerable volume. The leaves are alternate, leathery, elliptic-lanceolate to ovate, with an acute apex and a rounded-cordate base, and are accompanied by tendrils at the base of the petiole. The flowers are arranged in an umbel-like inflorescence that, upon ripening, gives rise to reddish-black berries resembling bunches of grapes. Endemic to Macaronesia, it is also found in the Canary Islands and Madeira.
