A thorny shrub that can reach up to 3 m in height, highly branched from its base and covered in thorns along its trunk, branches, and leaves. The leaves are alternate, simple, ovate-lanceolate, dark green on the upper surface and lighter and tomentose on the underside, with thorns on both the midrib and the petiole. The showy flowers have a corolla of four to five bluish-purple lobes and are grouped in terminal clusters. The fruit is a berry, resembling small tomatoes that turn reddish-orange when ripe. The species is endemic to the Canary Islands, and the subspecies is endemic to Tenerife.
