Asteraceae

Sonchus canariensis (Sch. Bip.) Boulos subsp. canariensis

Tree sow thistle

A shrub or small tree, as it can grow to over 3 meters in height, with a thick, highly branched main stem, new branches appearing with each flowering. The leaves are arranged in rosettes at the branch tips. They are dark green, glabrous, linear to linear-lanceolate, pinnatifid with acute, weakly toothed lobes. This species undergoes summer dormancy, shedding all its leaves. The ray flowers are yellow, arranged in heads, which are grouped in clusters at the tips of the stems. Endemic to the Canary Islands.
