Asteraceae

Sonchus leptocephalus Cass. in Cuvier

Balillo, alpispillo, alpípere

A slender shrub that can reach up to 3 m in height, highly branched from the base, with very thin and brittle branches. The leaves, arranged in rosettes at the branch tips, are simple but deeply divided (pinnatisect), with very fine, linear lobes. The flowers are clustered in small, striking yellow heads arranged in compound terminal panicles. The fruits have pappus-like structures that aid in seed dispersal. It is a dormant species, losing its foliage during the warmer months. Endemic to the Canary Islands.
