Canary Islands Flora Garden

Lamiaceae

Teucrium heterophyllum L`Hér. subsp. brevipilosum Gaisberg.

Jócamo, Jocama

An endemic species of Macaronesia found in the Azores and western Canary Islands, with the exception of El Hierro, which has another endemic subspecies (Teucrium heterophyllum subsp. hierrense). It is a shrub up to 2 m tall, with quadrangular, hairy, herbaceous stems and simple, ovate-lanceolate leaves that are grayish-green, turning a striking red as they begin to dry. The large, unilabiate flowers are red, sometimes tinged with orange, suggesting that lizards and birds are its pollinators.
