Viburnaceae

Viburnum rugosum Pers.

Canary fuck, Follao

The follao is a shrub endemic to the Canary Islands, reaching up to 5 meters in height. It typically grows in an umbrella-like shape, with very flexible young branches. Its leaves are arranged oppositely and decussately on the stem, meaning the lower pair is rotated 90 degrees relative to the upper pair. They are evergreen, simple, elliptical to ovate-elliptic, covered with hairs on both the upper and lower surfaces, and somewhat leathery. Its small white flowers are grouped in umbrella-shaped inflorescences that emerge at the branch tips. Its fruits are fleshy, subglobular, and dark brown, purple, or black, resembling tiny eggplants. Its hard wood was used to make the stick for the stick-fighting game known as "juego del palo" (a traditional Canarian sport).
