Asteraceae

Vieria laevigata (Brouss. ex Willd.)

Webb in Webb & Berthel. bitter

The only species of this genus endemic to Tenerife, it inhabits the Teno area. It is a small, highly branched shrub with grayish branches, reaching 1 meter in height, though it can also grow trailing and exceed this size. The leaves are arranged alternately in a rosette, are ovate-lanceolate, slightly toothed at the apex, glabrous, and succulent. Its striking flower heads are arranged in terminal corymbs and consist of florets (regular central flowers) and ray florets (irregular peripheral ones) of yellow color, which give rise to fruits equipped with pappus, composed of scales and bristles, which aid in seed dispersal.
