Theaceae

Visnea mocanera L. f..

Mocán, Mocanera, Mocanero

This tree, endemic to the Macaronesian region, can exceptionally reach a height of 15 meters, although it resembles a shrub due to its branching from the base. Its leaves, which vary in size depending on the environmental conditions, are arranged alternately, are evergreen, lanceolate-elliptic, and have serrated edges. Hairs can be observed on the underside, especially along the midrib, when the leaves are young. The flowers are white, bell-shaped, and pendulous, arranged in clusters. Its fruit, a fleshy capsule ranging from black to purple, which splits open when ripe, has been edible (called "yoyas") since the time of the indigenous peoples.
