Solanaceae

Withania aristata (Aiton) Pauquy

Orobal of the country, Oroval

An endemic shrub of the Macaronesian region that can reach up to 5 meters in height. Its trunk is gnarled and brittle. The leaves are alternate, simple, large, dark green, and exhibit considerable morphological variation, ranging from ovate to ovate-elliptic or lanceolate with an attenuate base. They typically fall during the summer, although some healthy specimens do not. The flowers are greenish-yellow, with five parts in the calyx and corolla, and are grouped in clusters. The fruit is a berry resembling a small tomato, partially enclosed in an enlarged calyx, which persists into fruit and develops into a bell-shaped envelope with five long appendages.
