International Mobility
At the School of Doctoral and Postgraduate Studies, we encourage all our PhD students to undertake international mobility, in the belief that these experiences will contribute to their professional development and the consolidation of their research careers.
It would be desirable for the stays to be linked to obtaining the mention “International Doctorate”. The title of Doctor may include on its front the mention “International Doctorate” provided that the student, among others: requirements, spend at least three months outside Spain at a prestigious higher education institution or research centre, studying or carrying out research work.
At the same time, every academic year our centre welcomes international students who wish to complete their training, for example through the Erasmus internship programme, in collaboration with their home institution.
One of the most interesting options or the one most used by doctoral students today, to finance their stays abroad, is the Erasmus programme in its practical form. In the next document You will be able to see in nine steps how and why you can benefit from this modality and for more information you can consult the Erasmus Portal where you can also find information regarding the other type of mobility for studies.
You can enjoy a mobility aid of Erasmus Internships without prejudice to the fact that they may request other types of mobility in calls promoted by different bodies within or outside the ULL.
ULL doctoral students can choose between two modalities of the program Erasmus Internships:
- Voluntary internships
Students enrolled at the ULL can apply for them. At the EDEP this is the option that is contemplated specifically for PhD students. - Internships for recent graduates
Regardless of the curricular internships, students may choose this option to carry out the internships they consider appropriate to reinforce their training in the 12 months following the closing of their academic record. The application must be submitted in the academic year prior to the last year of the doctorate.
For more information about the requirements to apply for mobility, the different modalities of Erasmus Internships and the procedures to follow, you can access the Erasmus Portal from the ULL. Also, on the portal of the Vice-Rectorate for Internationalization, both in the mobility options as in the section of Calls, you will find much of the information necessary to understand this program. EXPLANATORY NOTE: The mobility application must be made when the Erasmus pre-selection calls organised annually by the University of La Laguna are officially published. The necessary documents must be submitted through the Electronic Office, with the supervision of the International Mobility Coordination if necessary.
Once the application has been accepted, students must contact the International Mobility Coordination (movipos@ull.edu.es) to formalize the Learning Contract. The procedures for the grant and other administrative details of the transfer will be carried out with the Vice-Rectorate for Internationalization and Cooperation.
The Erasmus internship mobility period can be used to obtain the international doctorate mention. To do so, you must take into account the following: current regulations.

The ULL has different tools to welcome students international interested in pursuing doctoral studies, either fully or partially. One of the options is to complete a thesis in international co-guardianship regimel between the ULL and a foreign university, thanks to which students can become doctors from both universities. You can consult the models and procedures for joint supervision agreements and others of interest for the doctorate in the following link, and the offer of the doctoral programs current at our university.
One of the options planned within the Erasmus programme to welcome PhD students from the European Union interested in doing mobility:
- Erasmus Internships
Doctoral students who wish to do mobility through the Erasmus Internship modality must contact a ULL professor who agrees to supervise their stay and sign the corresponding Learning Contract. As a suggestion, they can identify the professors through the following links: Teaching guides for undergraduate and master's degrees or by searching for research groups. They must notify the EDEP so that there is proof of this mobility through: movipos@ull.es
Students enrolled at the ULL during the academic year in which the application is submitted or those who are newly graduated in the following academic year. They must also be Spanish nationals or nationals of a Member State of the European Union or any other State participating in the actions corresponding to the Erasmus+ Programme, or be nationals of a country not participating in the programme and be in possession of a valid residence permit to reside in Spain during the period of mobility.
A maximum of 3 months of scholarship is funded, which includes monthly individual assistance and travel expenses. The mobility must last a minimum of 2 months and a maximum of 12, but it is important to note that Only 3 months are financed.
If previous mobilities have been carried out, the total sum of the mobilities (Studies + Internships) cannot exceed 12 months. by cycle of studies (Bachelor's, Master's or Doctorate). For EDEP doctoral students, therefore, mobility activities undertaken during the Bachelor's or Master's degree would not count.
In any company, institution, NGO or centre in any country participating in the Erasmus+ programme.
1.- RECENTLY GRADUATED. Mobility can be carried out within 12 months of the closing of the academic record, taking into account that the application must be submitted in the last year of the degree being studied.
2.- VOLUNTARY INTERNSHIPS. They can be requested by students who are enrolled at ULL but do not wish to opt for recognition of credits for the External Internship subject.
At EDEP this is the option that is contemplated specifically for PhD students.
YEAH. Students must agree with the host institution on the language in which they will carry out their internship, as well as the level required within the CEFR; this level must be accredited by means of an official certificate from the Vice-Rectorate for Internationalisation and Cooperation before undertaking the mobility.
YEAH, The Erasmus scholarship is compatible with the MEC scholarship, with the Canary Islands Government scholarship or with any other aid.
Students may request from other public or private bodies the granting of mobility aids compatible with the European standard, subject to the requirements imposed by each institution (Cabildo, Town Councils, etc.).
YEAH, it is possible, although it does not happen very often.
