Access and Admission Criteria

General criteria

In general, to access a doctoral program it will be necessary to hold official Spanish undergraduate (or equivalent) and university master's degrees (or equivalent) provided that at least 300 credits of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) have been passed in the set of these two studies. 

Likewise, access will be granted to those who fall under any of the following categories: 

  • To hold official Spanish university degrees or equivalent Spanish degrees, provided that at least 300 ECTS credits have been passed in all of these studies and to accredit a level 3 of the MECES (Reference to the list of qualifications that represent a MECES level 3). 
  • To hold a qualification obtained under foreign educational systems belonging to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), without the need for official recognition, that certifies a level 7 of the European Qualifications Framework (EQF), provided that said qualification qualifies the holder for admission to doctoral studies in the issuing country. This admission will not, under any circumstances, imply the official recognition of the applicant's previous qualification or its recognition for any purpose other than admission to doctoral studies. 
  • To hold a degree obtained under foreign educational systems outside the EHEA, without the need for prior validation testing by the university that it certifies a level of education equivalent to that of the official Spanish Master's degree and that it qualifies the holder in the country where the degree was issued for admission to doctoral studies (according to Article 6 of these instructions). This admission will not, under any circumstances, imply the validation of the applicant's prior degree or its recognition for any purpose other than admission to doctoral studies.
  • Be in possession of another doctoral degree.
  • Having previously obtained a training place in the corresponding entrance exam for specialized health training places and having successfully completed at least two years of training in a program to obtain the official title of one of the specialties in Health Sciences

Specific criteria

Applicants, in addition to meeting the requirements of the previous article, must meet the specific requirements established by each degree program as mandatory for admission (specific degrees, taking entrance exams, minimum knowledge in a subject, additional language requirements, endorsement from the proposed thesis supervisor, etc.) and which are published in website for each degree, in the access and admission section. 

Among the most common specific requirements are: 

  1. Provide the endorsement of a researcher as a possible director of the doctoral thesis and the accreditation of a language level (see Annex I and article 7 of this instruction). 
  2. Include the requirement for specific supplementary training, in accordance with the admission profiles established for the corresponding program, which must be completed during the first academic year. Exceptionally, if the supplementary training for that academic year has been delivered (in whole or in part) before enrollment, the period for completing it is extended to the second academic year. This exception must be noted in the personal training plan.
