PhD Program in Logic and Philosophy of Science

Thesis supervision

The general requirements regarding thesis tutors and directors of the different participating universities can be found in the corresponding regulations or rules of Doctoral Studies available on the following websites:

List of activities planned (by the PD/university) to promote the supervision of Doctoral theses

List of activities planned to promote the supervision of doctoral theses and the existence of a guide to good practices for their supervision:

  • Inform all program teachers of regulatory changes.
  • Involve faculty in requesting projects and formalizing contracts and collaboration agreements whose objectives include training doctors.
  • Inform the programme's professors of all the recognition of tutoring work established in each of the programme's universities and of the commitments to certify them for the appropriate purposes: regional supplements, five-year teaching periods, etc.
  • Informing professors of the commitments made in the supervision of doctoral students and the direction of their theses.
  • Facilitate communication between students interested in being admitted to the doctoral program and the professors of the program.

Existence and details of a Guide to Good Practices for the supervision of doctoral theses

According to the Guide to Good Practices: criteria and guidelines for the academic management of doctoral programs, approved by the USAL Doctoral Commission on October 12, 2011 (and provisional until the Guide to Good Practices of the Doctoral School is approved), all doctors with accredited research experience may direct doctoral theses by fulfilling one of the following requirements:

  • Have at least one recognized six-year period of research activity whose evaluated period includes at least one of the last 7 years.
  • Being or having been, in the last 5 years, the principal investigator of a research project funded through a public call.
  • Be the author/co-author of at least three scientific articles published in journals included in the Journal Citation Reports or three relevant contributions in the corresponding scientific field in the last six years, always in accordance with the criteria of the National Commission for the Evaluation of Research Activity (CNEAI) or the University Quality Agencies.
  • Being the author/co-author, in the last 6 years, of a patent in exploitation.
  • Having directed a Doctoral Thesis in the last 5 years that has resulted in at least one publication in journals included in the Journal Citation Reports or some relevant contribution
  • in his scientific field.
  • Any other requirement that, due to the specific scientific field of the Doctoral Program, does not correspond to any of the above and may be considered of research relevance by the Academic Committee.

In addition to the advisory and training duties inherent to the task of directing research, the Directors will have, among others, the following functions:

  1. Advise the doctoral student on the most appropriate and suitable training activities and supplements for his or her Research Plan.
  2. Advise and guide the doctoral student in the development of the Research Plan.
  3. Agree on the research supervision plan, plan and hold regular meetings with the PhD student.
  4. Authorize and certify the training activities that the doctoral student carries out within the PD.
  5. Issue, annually, the assessment/monitoring reports on the Activity Document and the Research Plan of the assigned doctoral students and deliver them, with sufficient notice (for example, 1 month), to the Academic Committee so that it can in turn carry out the positive or negative evaluation of each doctoral student.
  6. Provide guidance on regulatory, ethical, operational and research support services aspects.
  7. Ensure that the doctoral candidate is familiar with the administrative and academic requirements for submitting the Research Plan, the Activity Document, the submission and defense of the thesis, as well as the time limits for all related procedures and processes.
  8. Read, correct, and comment on the thesis manuscript prior to the established submission date, provided that the doctoral candidate has provided the copy with sufficient notice.

Likewise, and with the aim of encouraging good practices in the direction of doctoral theses, it is recommended that the director:

  • Provide sufficient bibliographic information to allow the doctoral student a certain level of knowledge and reflection prior to developing the research project on the state of the art.
  • Provide a clear definition of lines of research and objectives.
  • Promote regular meetings of scientific content between the PhD student and other members of the research team, encouraging the PhD student to discuss his or her hypotheses and research results with the other researchers in the group before making them known to the outside world.
  • Encourage PhD students to communicate and publish their results regularly and periodically.
  • Encourage mobility actions and participation in training activities.
  • Management of resources that ensure the viability of research.

The rest of the participating universities have committed to preparing the corresponding guide to good practices.

List of activities planned by the PD that promote multiple direction, in academically justified cases.

Co-supervision will be especially encouraged in cases involving an experienced supervisor and a new supervisor, so that young professors can gain experience and responsibility within the Doctoral Program. Co-supervision will also be encouraged when the thesis topic chosen by the doctoral student includes renowned specialists from outside the program. Finally, co-supervision of theses will be encouraged in interdisciplinary topics where the participation of experts from different fields is necessary.

Participation of international experts in monitoring committees, preliminary reports and thesis committees

The Academic Committee of the Interuniversity Doctoral Program in Logic and Philosophy of Science will take all necessary steps to promote and encourage the inclusion of the International Mention in the doctoral degrees awarded under its umbrella. This Mention will guarantee the presence of international experts in the preparation of preliminary reports and on the reviewing panels that must judge theses. According to Article 15 of Royal Decree 99/2011, the international mention in a doctoral degree requires that the thesis has been reviewed by at least two expert doctors from a non-Spanish higher education institution or research institute, and that at least one expert doctor from a non-Spanish higher education institution or research center has been part of the thesis reviewing panel. At the same time, the collaboration that the various Research Groups involved in this Program have been developing with other research groups, centers and foreign Universities, through the corresponding agreements (see point 5.2) will facilitate the presence of international experts in the monitoring committees, in the preliminary reports and in the thesis committees.
