Microdegree in Technical and Digital Documentation of Cultural Heritage
Brief description
The Microdegree in Technical and Digital Documentation of Cultural Heritage is a postgraduate qualification that enables the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and specialized technical competencies focused on the recording, analysis, representation, and dissemination of cultural assets. It is designed to equip students with fundamental tools for the production of rigorous graphic, photographic, and digital documentation.,
applied to the study, diagnosis, conservation, restoration, cataloging and communication of cultural heritage.
Through a 24 ECTS course, the program enables students to acquire technical and methodological skills applied to four fundamental areas: photography, photographic documentation techniques, scientific drawing, and three-dimensional digitization. The degree offers an integrated view of the documentary process: from image capture and technical control, lighting, color management, and digital processing, to scientific graphic representation, photogrammetry, and the generation of 3D models.
Block 1: Scientific Drawing
- Drawing as a tool for observation, analysis and interpretation.
- Methodology of didactic and scientific illustration.
- Graphic language: line, color, composition, scale, legend and representation systems.
- Adapting the image to the objective, audience, and context of dissemination.
- Application of scientific drawing to the study and documentation of heritage.
- Fundamentals of the photographic medium: light, camera obscura, image formation and history of photography.
- Camera operation: optics, focus, aperture, shutter speed, ISO and white balance.
- Digital photography: sensors, resolution, file types, bit depth, and color spaces.
- Digital laboratory: screen calibration, image processing and basic photographic project.
Block 3: Three-dimensional digitization and heritage
- Introduction to 3D digitization applied to cultural heritage.
- Close-up object photogrammetry: capture, point clouds and 3D model generation.
- Model editing: geometry, meshes, digital sculpting and textures.
- Rendering, animation and presentation of digital models.
- 3D file organization for documentation, analysis, conservation and dissemination of heritage.
Block 4: Photographic Documentation Techniques
- Photography applied to reports, projects and cataloging of cultural assets.
- Lighting, photometry, color management and technical image control.
- Registration of two-dimensional and three-dimensional works.
- Special techniques of grazing light, transmitted light, visible/invisible spectrum, photogrammetry and RTI.
- RAW workflow, digital processing, file export, and methodological documentation.

- B3 – That students have the ability to gather, analyze and interpret relevant data on cultural assets, their materials, techniques, state of conservation and context, in order to make judgments that integrate social, scientific, ethical and heritage dimensions.
The Microdegree in Technical and Digital Documentation of Cultural Heritage is designed for individuals interested in the graphic, photographic, and digital documentation of cultural assets, as well as in the use of technical tools applied to the recording, analysis, conservation, cataloging, and dissemination of heritage. The recommended entry profile is considered to be:
- Students from the University of La Laguna in the fields of knowledge of Art and Humanities and other related degrees who wish to complement their official training with technical skills applied to heritage documentation.
- Professionals in the field of cultural heritage: conservators-restorers, people linked to museums, archives, conservation centers, heritage-related companies, cultural institutions seeking to update or expand their knowledge in technical photography, graphic documentation, scientific drawing, photogrammetry and three-dimensional digitization.
Students are advised to have a basic understanding of graphic, photographic, or digital tools to better benefit from the coursework. A proactive attitude toward independent learning, technical precision, critical observation, experimentation with digital technologies, and planning of documentary processes applied to cultural heritage are also desirable.
