Master's Degree in Terrestrial Biodiversity and Conservation in Islands

Internships

Internships in companies, organizations and institutions are mandatory in those master's degrees that have it established in their curriculum. They involve bringing students closer to real situations, complementing the training received with the reality of the working world.

External internships (PE) are specifically focused on the application of the training content acquired in the teaching phase, in the practice of biodiversity management and conservation.

These PEs also develop the skills to be acquired by the student, both the basic skills and a good part of the transversal skills [1-23] and, depending on the host institution or company and the activity to be carried out, certain of the specific skills of the degree [24-58].

For the development of these PEs we have presented the agreements and acceptance letters requested by the ULL Postgraduate Commission. In addition to these, students can benefit from Specific Agreements established from Collaboration Agreements included in the Educational Cooperation Program of the Faculty of Biology.

The practical task to be developed must necessarily be linked to the competencies of the degree.

PEs must meet the following requirements:

  • To be carried out in a Company or Institution linked to topics related to the specific competencies of the Master's Degree with which the University of La Laguna has signed an agreement.
  • That the tutoring tasks, in each case, are carried out in a coordinated manner by a professor of the Master's Degree appointed by the Academic Committee of the Master's Degree and by a tutor from the Company or Institution, who will be the person in charge of the instruction of the student and the contact person with the Master's Degree.
  • The internships will be carried out according to the schedule established by the company or institution.
  • Students applying for an internship must have passed at least 51 ECTS of the compulsory subjects of the first two semesters of the master's degree (85 % of the ECTS of their subjects).
  • The Internship Coordinator will publish, with sufficient notice, the list of positions offered in the different companies or institutions that have signed the required agreement, where the PE can be carried out.
  • Priority in the selection by students will be based on the grades obtained during the development of the master's degree and for this purpose the Academic Committee will publish the list of students ordered by their grades.
  • The evaluation of the internships will be carried out according to the evaluation criteria established in the corresponding Teaching Guide and the report prepared by the external tutor, who is part of the company or institution that has hosted the student. The evaluation of the external tutor will have a value of 60% and that of the internal tutor, based on the internship report submitted to him, will have a value of 40%.

Internship Coordinator:

The functions of the PE coordinator are:

  • Search for and select institutions and companies for the development of the PE. The agreements must be signed by the Rector of the University or the person delegated by him/her.
  • Plan the PEs and prepare information material.
  • Disseminate the PE according to procedure PR-27, “Public Information”.
  • Ensure the execution of Student Guidance actions in the development of the PE, according to procedure PR-10 “Student Guidance”.
  • Stay in contact with the PE tutors to monitor their proper development. To this end, regular meetings will be held with them, at least at the beginning and halfway through the PE.
  • Ensure coordination between internal and external tutors. These tutors will have at least one initial meeting before starting the activity and regular meetings to monitor the progress of the activities.

Academic internships may be carried out in collaborating entities/companies, such as companies, institutions, public/private entities, public administrations or dependent organizations, etc.

For the development of external internships, the University of La Laguna maintains the necessary agreements with companies, organizations and institutions in which it is considered that students can acquire the professional skills appropriate to the degree and that respond to the professional profiles defined in the Report.

General requirements for carrying out external internships

In order to carry out external internships, students must meet the following general requirements:

  • Be enrolled in the degree and in the External Internship subject of your study plan.
  • Not to maintain any contractual relationship with the company, institution or entity, except in cases described in the applicable regulations.
  • Any other academic requirement established by the degree in its Verification/Modification Report and in the teaching guide for the subject.

The degree has the structures and mechanisms for the organisation, management, evaluation and monitoring of external internships, which are specified in: the Academic Committee of the Master (CAM), the Coordination of External Internships, the academic tutors and External tutors. At the degree level, the Coordinator of External Internships, who is included in the Teaching Guide, is responsible for managing the development of the subject:

The Academic Committee will carry out the selection and assignment of academic tutors to the students. For his/her part, the Coordinator of External Internships of the degree, together with the academic tutors, is responsible for agreeing with the external tutors of the entities the number of students to be admitted, the temporality and the activities to be carried out by the students.

For the evaluation of this activity, the student must prepare a report on the activities carried out at the internship center, which will be assessed for the quality and correctness of expression regarding the content, as well as its presentation and defense.
