Master's Degree in Religious Sciences: History and Society (Interuniversity)

The new Master's Degree in Religious Sciences: History and Society (Interuniversity) was born from the conviction that it is necessary to strengthen the regulated academic offering of religious studies at Spanish public universities through an interuniversity alliance, thus bringing us closer to the century-long and brilliant tradition of religious studies in other European countries. This interuniversity Master's Degree is taught at a total of three universities: Pablo de Olavide University, Carlos III University of Madrid, and the University of La Laguna.

General information

Purpose of the Master's Degree

  • These are, therefore, two complementary and parallel itineraries, the first dedicated to the historical analysis of the religious phenomenon and the second to providing adequate tools for those who face the tasks of regulating or facilitating the coexistence of communities in a multi-religious society.
  • Likewise, the Master's degree aims to provide the necessary training for the management of diversity in multi-religious societies from the different areas of state administration (local, regional and state), and from the development of public policies, especially regarding legislation and educational foundations.
  • The Master's program will offer training in religion as a cultural system and a theoretical and methodological framework for the analysis and understanding of the religious phenomenon. Special attention will be paid to developing a specific sensitivity for analyzing the testimonies specific to each religion. This reflection will be linked to the historical development of the religious phenomenon, and therefore special attention will be paid to religions in diachronicity, a basis for understanding their own transformations in conceptual, moral, and liturgical terms, as opposed to the idea of the immutability of religious constructs.
  • The general objective of this Master's degree is to provide a high level of training in Religious Sciences to future researchers and professionals from different fields (professors, politicians, administration technicians, diplomats, journalists, cultural managers, social workers, aid workers, etc.)

Who is it for?

  • The Master's Degree is aimed especially at people who are characterized by an interest in the cultural manifestations of societies throughout history and in the present. In general, the Master's Degree is aimed at graduates and diploma holders, both Spanish and foreign, from any branch of knowledge; priority will be given to graduates and diploma holders in Humanities, History, Law, Political Science, Philosophy, Philology, Sociology, Anthropology, History of Art, Information Sciences, Social Work.
