Among the functions of universities is the training of professionals who respond to the needs of society. However, the employment prospects of university graduates are influenced not only by the training acquired during their studies, but also by personal factors and many other factors related to the characteristics of the socioeconomic context, the demand for professionals in the general social environment, and the adequacy between the level of skills required for the job openings and those acquired during their training.
The University of La Laguna's Employment, Training, and Quality Observatory's main objective is to collect, analyze, and provide information regarding the training and job placement process of university students and graduates.
This includes obtaining, calculating and analyzing indicators through cross-referencing administrative data, as well as surveying the opinions of stakeholders involved in the training and job placement process in higher education (students, graduates, employers, etc.).
Knowledge of the characteristics and factors underlying the job placement process for graduates at the beginning of their professional careers is essential for universities to anticipate and respond to the challenges they face, and to adapt the training of future professionals to the demands of the social environment and the needs for transformation of the region's economic and social fabric.
By cross-referencing academic data of enrolled students and graduates from public universities in the Canary Islands with information from Social Security records, the Municipal Register of Residents and Job Seekers of the Canary Islands Employment Service (SCE) conducted by ISTAC, and cross-referencing data from the aforementioned universities with the databases of employed contracts and job applications conducted by the Canary Islands Employment Observatory (OBECAN).
Providing support and an integrated response to institutional evaluation and quality programs and processes, with the aim of establishing a comprehensive and systematic procedure for measuring and collecting satisfaction and assessment data from different stakeholder groups (students, faculty, administrative and service staff, graduates, employers, users, etc.). Proposing actions and incentives to increase participation.
Responding to the need for information on employability and job placement to promote the review and improvement of university degrees and facilitate decision-making by decision-makers. The survey among graduates two years after graduation is currently planned for an annual basis, and among employers for a biennial basis.
Promoting expert training, mentoring, and support in the development of research or intervention projects in this field. For example, the collaboration with the ULPGC, OBECAN, and FULP to conduct a study on the impact of non-work placements on the career prospects of university graduates was presented at the 7th University Employment Observatories Conference.
Using various tools to gather information on the business community to, among other things, identify niches and training demands for the adaptation, improvement, or design of new qualifications, or the elimination of current ones.
Examples include the "Interactive Analysis of the Jobs of ULL Graduates" presented at the 8th University Employment Observatory Conference and the ULL Open Days for the 2018/2019 academic year to teaching and guidance staff, or the "Job Placement Statistics for Higher Education Graduates in the Canary Islands."
An example is the Pilot System for the Evaluation and Monitoring of External Internships, which has been developed in collaboration with the internship coordinators of the School of Engineering, the Degree in Environmental Sciences and the Degree in Chemistry, which allows the scalable centralization and automation of the evaluation and academic monitoring of internships with the evaluation of the quality and satisfaction with the internship programs, providing valuable information on all the agents involved (center, degree, collaborating entities, external tutors, academic tutors and students).
Identifying the vocational needs, expectations, and interests of first-year students, investigating their university experiences (needs, main difficulties, information needs, etc.), diagnosing the level of employability and identifying gaps in the future job placement process for final-year and postgraduate students.
Providing tools for diagnosis and analysis, and collaborating in the development of program monitoring and evaluation protocols.
Providing an annual report on the observatory's activities, generating popular articles with the main results.
Currently, the University of La Laguna, through the FGULL Results Analysis and Dissemination Unit and under the supervision of the Vice-Rectorate for Students, Employability, and the Guajara Campus, coordinates the Subgroup of University Employment Observatories of the CRUE Employment Working Group – Student Affairs.
