The Ministry of Ecological Transition, Climate Action and Territorial Planning of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the General Directorate of Energy, has financed with 500,000 euros different energy efficiency actions in buildings of the University of La Laguna.
This week, the regional councilor responsible for the Area, José Antonio Valbuena, visited the facilities where these works have been carried out together with the rector of the educational institution, Rosa Aguilar, and the regional director of Energy of the Autonomous Government, Rosana Melián.
Valbuena explained that these improvements have consisted of replacing and upgrading lighting fixtures, enclosures and windows, air conditioning systems, hot water production systems, and electrical outlets in faculties such as Law, Sciences, and Education. These improvements have also been extended to the buildings that make up the Central Campus and to student residences.

For her part, the Rector of the University of La Laguna, accompanied by the Vice-Rector for Infrastructure and Sustainability, Monserrat Acosta, expressed her deep gratitude for this grant, “which helps to create a more sustainable university, more committed to the SDGs and more involved in addressing the challenges facing the planet.” Aguilar added that these actions, along with the installation of photovoltaic panels on 22 buildings and pergolas in 11 parking areas, will result in estimated energy savings of 311,000 kWh. All of these sustainability initiatives are included in this web, which will be updated periodically as the actions that are still out for tender are completed.
Finally, Rosana Melián reminded everyone that public administrations and institutions must have "an exemplary character" for the rest of the population in terms of energy efficiency and, "in the case of universities, it has a multiplier effect if we take into account the large number of young people who pass through their facilities daily and make use of their energy resources.".
The Ministry of Ecological Transition, Climate Action and Territorial Planning of the Government of the Canary Islands made a direct subsidy to the University of La Laguna to cover the cost of these interventions and will soon announce a similar action at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The team from the Regional Ministry and the University had the opportunity to visit one of the facilities that have been the subject of this subsidy, specifically the one related to the domestic hot water of the San Agustín Residence Hall, through equipment equipped with solar panels, with a descaling system included and much more efficient than the previous one.
