The workshop aims to revive an activity that took place in 2007, led by Professor Ernesto Gil, in which both writers and university professors participated. “We wanted to recapture that spirit, in this case, with professors from the University of La Laguna, with various lectures, and with two writers who write together and, therefore, complement each other very well and have a very interesting body of work: José Ángel Mañas and Jordi Ledesma,” explains one of the course's academic directors, Javier Rivero Grandoso, Professor of Spanish Philology at the university and head of the chair.
Black List It is conceived as a university extension activity and “allows us to address issues related to literature, in this case, crime fiction, which, unfortunately, often don't fit into the university calendar due to the format and time constraints of the curricula,” Rivero points out. In this way, it provides “students with supplementary training and, by its very nature, is aimed at all kinds of students; they don't have to be students, but can be professionals from any sector, retired people… simply, people interested in literature and film,” the professor adds.
Organized jointly with the Department of Culture of the Tacoronte City Council, with the support of the island councils of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, the course program focuses in this first edition on noir literature and film. “The course is called 'crime genre' because we study it in its different disciplines, and in this first edition we are going to concentrate on the two arts in which the genre is most represented, literature and film, and on the processes of adaptation,‘ explains Rivero.
The aim of the presentations and short workshops is to apply new critical perspectives to the crime genre; to conduct comparative analyses of literary and artistic texts of the noir genre, and to study texts from crime literature and other cinematic works. noir, The aim is to reflect on the theory of the crime genre and analyze literary creation applied to it. In addition to Mañas and Ledesma, four research professors from the University of La Laguna are participating: Javier Rivero, Isabel Castells, Paula Cabrera, and Fermín Domínguez.
