The Antonio González Scientific Week, The conference, which is organized annually by the Department of Organic Chemistry of the University of La Laguna and held at the auditorium of the Antonio González Institute of Bio-Organic Chemistry (IUBO), opened its twenty-fifth edition today, Tuesday, October 3, certifying the consolidation of a scientific event with a dual objective: to bring the best national specialists in organic chemistry to the Tenerife institution and to serve as a presentation forum for young local researchers on this subject.
This new edition was inaugurated by the rector of the University of La Laguna, Francisco García, accompanied at the table by the deputy minister of Universities and Research of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ciro Gutiérrez; the director of the Department of Organic Chemistry, José María Palazón; and the representative of the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry, David Tejedor.
In his address, the rector praised Antonio González for his dual role as a researcher and administrator. Regarding his research, he commended González's foresight in understanding that a place with as many endemic species as the Canary Islands was ideal for developing high-level research on natural products. Regarding his administratorship, he highlighted González's keen awareness of social needs and his close relationship with the Tenerife Island Council, which facilitated the creation of the Faculty of Medicine and the IUBO building itself during his tenure.
García believes that the dual nature of the field, as demonstrated by Antonio González, remains exemplary. In his view, contemporary society demands an academy that is more accessible and engaged with its problems, while new economic trends increasingly value activities related to science and innovation. “Look at the Covid-19 pandemic, the eruption of Tajogaite volcano, and the recent wildfire on the island: alongside the technical experts, there are now also scientists.”.
The rector also praised the characteristics of the forum inaugurated today, which not only focuses on renowned scientists from institutions such as the Autonomous University of Madrid, the University of Zaragoza, the University of Granada, the University of Barcelona, the University of La Laguna itself, and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), but also gives a voice to younger researchers, who are participating with 12 oral presentations and 43 posters. The lectures and presentations that make up the program will take place in the mornings until Friday, October 6.
