The ULL hosted some of the promoters of Social and Cultural Anthropology in Spain

Thursday October 5, 2023 - 08:31 CEST

The Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication at the University of La Laguna hosted the 7th Fernando Estévez González Anthropology Week during the last days of September. As in previous years, this event brought together a large number of national and international researchers committed to the advancement of this discipline in its many fields of study and work. This year's edition featured the participation of some of the leading figures in Social and Cultural Anthropology in Spain, and all the speakers were either current or retired professors from Spanish universities.

The first day began with a presentation by Alberto Galván, from the University of La Laguna, who introduced the speakers. He was followed by Ubaldo Martínez Veiga, from the Autonomous University of Madrid and the UNED (National University of Distance Education), and a former student of Marvin Harris, who analyzed the developments in evolutionism that led to the cultural materialism of this renowned author.

Next, Lourdes Méndez, from the University of the Basque Country, spoke about the challenges for a feminist anthropology of art, followed by Susana Narotzky, from the University of Barcelona, who addressed the topic of the Anthropology of Work in the contemporary world. This researcher was awarded the Ramón Menéndez Pidal National Research Prize in the Humanities in 2020 and is currently the head of the Social Sciences scientific area at the Spanish State Research Agency.

The second day focused on the role of Anthropology in addressing social and environmental problems, with a particular emphasis on marine resources. It began with a presentation by Jesús Contreras Hernández, from the University of Barcelona, who spoke about the anthropology of food, focusing on fish consumption and analyzing patterns of change in its consumption from traditional societies to the present day.

José Pascual, from the University of La Laguna, addressed this same topic, citing the Ecotúnidos initiative, developed within the H2020 FOODE project, as an example of the discipline's application. This initiative has facilitated the supply of local fish to schools in Tenerife, in collaboration with fishing sector organizations and other institutions. The session concluded with a roundtable discussion on the current challenges facing Social Anthropology in Spain, featuring all the speakers.

Anthropology Week is held annually at the University of La Laguna and, since 2017, has been dedicated to Fernando Estévez González (1953-2016), Professor of Social Anthropology at the university and coordinator of the Museum of History and Anthropology of Tenerife. This year, the week was organized by the University Institute for Social Research and Tourism, the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication. This event was made possible thanks to the support of the Vice-Rectorate for Research and Transfer and the Campus of International Excellence, CEI Canarias-ULL
