Ecca.edu The University of La Laguna is celebrating its sixtieth anniversary of distance education via the airwaves. Today, January 8th, an exhibition opened at the University of La Laguna that reviews this history. a trajectory through which many Spaniards had the opportunity to be educated thanks to the radio, which offered its first programs in February 1965.

The César Manrique Building on the Guajara campus is hosting an exhibition that will remain open until January 13th and, under the motto '60 years transforming lives through education', highlights the most significant milestones of this educational center for adults, which has become an exclusively digital platform two years ago.

The inauguration was attended by the rector of the academic institution, Francisco García, and the general director of ecca.edu, José María Segura, accompanied by a large group of students. Both emphasized the importance of this celebration, given that it is a system that has facilitated access to education for diverse segments of society, universalizing its content and promoting professional development.

The general director of ecca.edu, José María Segura, and the rector of the ULL, Francisco García.

“Both institutions share the same values of defending public education,” the rector stated, adding that breaking down barriers to promote education as the primary means of social mobility is crucial. This issue is especially relevant in the Canary Islands, he added, one of the regions with the highest levels of inequality in the entire country.

Through information panels with access to audio recordings, the exhibition recalls 1963, when Radio Ecca was founded in Gran Canaria, described as the “radio that teaches.” Two years later, the first course was held, with 500 students enrolled. The model expanded and was exported to Latin America in the 1970s, reaching the Dominican Republic. It was during this period that the parents' school was established, and in the 1980s, the Ecca Foundation was created as a center for guidance and support for students.

The system is becoming more robust and is also evolving, so that in the 21st century it is migrating to a digital platform. “We want to continue changing the world, in partnership with the University of La Laguna,” its director stated.
