This week, the BIP (blended intensive program) course, in which the University of La Laguna participated and which was titled “Machine Learning for Data Science,” concluded in Bremen. The course focuses on the study of Artificial Intelligence methods, specifically Machine Learning, for use in Data Science.
The BIP, which is part of the academic activity of the alliance of nine universities STARS EU, The course, in which the ULL participates, is worth 6 credits, corresponding to 60 hours of instruction. This instruction is primarily online and takes place throughout the semester, culminating in a one-week in-person session at one of the participating institutions, in this case, the Hochschule Bremen City University of Applied Sciences (Germany).
These short, intensive programs foster innovative teaching and learning methods, including inquiry-based and challenge-solving approaches. In this edition, the project presented to the students used a database of car dealerships. The objective was to predict, based on more than 100 characteristics of each vehicle, how long it would remain at the dealership before being sold. To solve the problem, the students had to use artificial intelligence methods and process more than 10 million data points.
In this course, in addition to the University of La Laguna and HSB Bremen, the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (Portugal) and Hanze University of Applied Sciences (Netherlands) are participating. A total of 40 students participated, five of whom were from the University of La Laguna. The students were selected from the undergraduate programs in Computer Engineering and Industrial Engineering, as well as the master's programs in Computer Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Industrial Computer Engineering and Robotics. The BIP coordinators at this academic center are Professors Juan Albino Méndez and Rafael Arnay, who participated as instructors in both the online phase and this week of in-person instruction.
This initiative is part of the strategic actions that the Vice-Rectorate for Internationalization and Cooperation of the ULL is promoting in the context of the STARS EU alliance, whose purpose is to strengthen the internationalization of universities in both the teaching and research areas.
