The University of La Laguna participates in S4i, an international scientific meeting point

Thursday January 30, 2025 - 15:03 CET

The University of La Laguna was present at the third edition of S4i, on January 29 and 30, in Madrid, with the participation of the program TEKNE and the Knowledge Transfer Office (OTC) of the academic center. This event is the largest international meeting point for Deep Science, organized by the Autonomous University of Madrid and BeAble Capital.

Julio Brito, managing director of the ULL General Foundation, explains why the University, along with its foundation, attended this event: “It is essential to increase our level of knowledge transfer related to the valorization of the research we conduct.” To this end, several initiatives participated that are in the process of being transferred as business projects or patents.

Among them, the following stand out TEKNE, This program supports innovative ideas in strategic sectors such as engineering, biotechnology, health sciences, renewable energy, environmental sustainability, and materials technology. These initiatives stand out for their focus on sustainability, innovation, and positive impact on society and the environment.

Representing the participating projects, Alberto Domínguez, a Doctor of Medicine from the University of La Laguna, attended this meeting with his proposal Cardio Beat, A platform that improves cardiac auscultation skills with realistic sounds and educational guides. María José Trujillo, PhD in Chemistry from the same institution and one of the participants in INVIAL, presented the initiative that develops microextraction systems to improve sample preparation in chemical and bioanalytical analyses, optimizing laboratory processes.

Also present was Julio Francisco Rufo, one of the members of the COTAS project, which seeks to improve underwater communication with visible light, offering safety and a better experience in underwater tourism.

Cristo Rodríguez, coordinator of the National Research Project Promotion and Management Area of the OTC, presented the activity through two projects: an electrochemical cell for the detection of amines, which consists of a special sensor that continuously measures the presence of biogenic amines, substances that can indicate the decomposition of food or certain biological processes; and a system for capturing and inactivating pathogens that performs configurable physicochemical treatments.

Pablo Martín, a software engineer at Wooptix, the first spin-off company from the University of La Laguna, presented one of their latest projects, the SEBI RT 1000, a camera that measures wavefront phases. This technique reveals details invisible to traditional cameras, allowing for the detection of defects, irregularities, and variations in various structures with extreme precision. He also showcased the Light Field project, a demo of stereo cameras that simulate the human eye.

Each of the participants had the opportunity to present their initiatives to industry leaders, scientists, and the most representative international investment funds and institutions focused on Deep Science.
