Every year the Christmas Concert The University of La Laguna's annual concert has a strong charitable focus, with all proceeds from the event, featuring performances by the university's choral groups and supported by Cajasiete, going entirely to a non-governmental organization or association working to eradicate a disease. This year, the chosen organization is the one that addresses the... meningitis, And today, February 19, one of its members, Ana María Castillo, was given a check for 4,370 euros.
Meningitis is caused by inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It can be viral, in which case it is generally milder, or bacterial, which is seriously dangerous and can progress very rapidly. According to the website of this association, it is estimated that approximately 12,000 people in Spain are affected each year, of which 2,000 are bacterial and 10,000 are viral.
Although it can be fatal, those who survive are often left with disabilities, sensory loss, brain damage, or limb amputation. Therefore, the spokesperson for this association explains that the money raised by the University of La Laguna will be used to purchase hearing aids, cochlear implants, and prostheses for legs and hands.
Living with such severe aftereffects is not easy, and in fact the association offers support and psychological assistance to those affected, while also carrying out extensive prevention work to warn of the importance of vaccination at an early age.
Both the rector, Francisco García, and the vice-rector of Culture and University Extension, Isabel León, were very pleased with this act of solidarity from the academic center, a public institution that is not only responsible for leading quality teaching and research, but also for transmitting civic values and social commitment.
