The Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities has announced The list of winners of the National Research Awards has been released, both in the category for extensive career achievement and in the category for individuals under 40 years of age, with ten awardees in each. In the latter category, one of the recipients of this distinction is Jezabel Curbelo Hernández, born in Los Realejos and a graduate in Mathematics from the University of La Laguna in 2009.

Curbelo has been the youngest professor at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia since July of this year and, previously, was a Ramón y Cajal researcher at the same institution between 2020 and 2025. The mathematician earned her doctorate in 2014 from the Autonomous University of Madrid with a dissertation that was awarded the 2015 Donald L. Turcotte Award (AGU) for its outstanding contribution to nonlinear geophysics, as well as the 2015 Vicent Caselles Prize (RSME – FBBVA). She has also received the 2020 Antonio Valle SEMA Award for Young Researchers and the L'ORÉAL-UNESCO For Women in Science Award, Spain edition – National Program for Young Talents 2020/2021.

His research focuses primarily on mathematics applied to geophysical flows, more specifically on the simulation and modeling of the complex processes underlying fluid movement and on the description of transport, mixing, and diffusion in the ocean and atmosphere from the perspective of dynamic systems theory.

From her doctorate to her current professorship, Curbelo Hernández has been a postdoctoral researcher at the Laboratoire de Geologie de Lyon from December 2014 to March 2016; a Juan de la Cierva Training postdoctoral researcher at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (April 2016-August 2016), an assistant professor at the Autonomous University of Madrid (September 2016-January 2020) and a Visiting Associate Researcher at the University of California, Los Angeles (February 2020-June 2020).
