Friday 31 de October de 2025 - 09:02 CET

This week, the University of La Laguna held a meeting with guidance counselors from secondary schools in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. During the meeting, information was provided about university entrance exams, the range of degrees offered by the academic institution, and the various activities planned for future university students next year.

Rosario Hernández Borges, Vice-Rector of Students of the University of La Laguna; José Manuel Cabrera Delgado, Deputy Minister of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands; and David Sánchez Rodríguez, Vice-Rector of Students of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, were the authorities in charge of inaugurating this event.

Rosario Hernández emphasized the importance of this meeting, as it serves as a link between students and the university. “The information students receive depends on the guidance counselors. Therefore, the more accurate and comprehensive the information, the better they can convey it to the students, enabling them to make better choices and adapt more effectively,” the Vice-Rector stated.

At this forum, it was announced that the university entrance exam (PAU) scheduled for 2026 will follow the same format as this year's, continuing to incorporate more competency-based questions and reducing the number of optional subjects. "We want the exam to become increasingly standardized across the country, so this year the start date will be the same in all autonomous communities," commented Deputy Minister Cabrera. Thus, the PAU will begin one day earlier, starting on Tuesday, June 2nd, and ending on Friday, June 5th for the regular session, while the resit session will begin on June 30th and end on July 2nd.

Another change announced by the deputy minister planned for the next call is that three new venues will be incorporated to carry out this test, two in the western province -Puerto de la Cruz and Los Llanos de Aridane (La Palma)- and one in the eastern -Fuerteventura-.

For his part, the Vice-Rector of the ULPGC highlighted the importance of “promoting guidance for students in high school, and even in secondary school, so that they know how to make the most appropriate choice that benefits them the most, depending on their profile, in order to reduce the dropout rate, which in the Canary Islands is one of the highest in the entire country.”.

During the session, emphasis was placed on the importance of students being able to choose their desired degree program with all available information, as this will reduce dropout rates and create more realistic expectations. Furthermore, the Vice-Rector expressed concern regarding students with special educational needs (SEN), stressing that the university's adaptations will be exclusively methodological and not focused on competencies.

The results obtained in the 2025 University Entrance Exams were also reported, available in the statistics portal from the University of La Laguna, and special emphasis was placed on the activities organized by the Information and Guidance Service (SIO) for future students, such as the Open Day that will take place in January, the information sessions in educational centers that will be carried out virtually in March, as well as sessions for FP students and families during the same month.

In conclusion, the advantages and challenges of double degrees and credit recognition for students coming from higher vocational training at the start of their studies were discussed.
